What the Google?!

I’m not really the obsessive follower of internet trends or a download junkie for that matter, but I had to say something about the all new Google Pack. Head here, if you haven’t seen or heard of it already. Google’s also launched along with its new video service and a new google video player. Now the Google Pack is interesting. It basically takes the pain out of the installation of several popular ‘must-have’ software by providing a bundled installer that will download and install all of these.Software includes Google Earth, Google Desktop, Adobe Reader 7 (I don’t know if this is just the latest reader or the full application), Real Player, Google Talk, Trillian, Gallery Player, Picasa, Firefox with the google toolbar, the google toolbar for Internet Explorer, Google Pack Screensaver, Lavasoft’s Ad-Aware SE, Nortan Anti-Virus 2005 with six months of free updates and the option to choose only what you want to download as a part of the installer.

Much is strange about this. After Google’s affinity to Open Office how come open office is not a part of Google Pack? Stranger is why Google would decide to come out with such an application in the first place. Is Google doing the monopoly thing– trying to get their brand on to your desktop? The inclusion of Real Player in the Google Pack is also interesting, is it now the Google supported format for video? Hmmm…

It is rather interesting how the Google vs Yahoo battle is now unfolding into a Google vs Microsoft battle, with rumors of a Google OS… For now, the only challenge to Google is the open source movement, but then Google’s open source collaborations exist as well. At any rate Google Pack is a fine idea in itself for most newbies.
